Educational Support

education06.JPGLack of classroom in North Bakground Even though the education system is free of charge in Sri Lanka, parents have to pay expensive cost to their children’s education because of the expenditure of the books, stationary and other school materials and which is got higher than before.
Somehow parents are making effort to facilitate the needs of the children. But those families who are suffering poverty and who struggle for their daily wage cannot give the priority for the education and they do not have much knowledge to pay attention to education of their children. Because they are thinking providing food is the most important to them. This vicious cycle lead us expanding the educational gap, and finally, immobilizing the poverty group in the future.

On the other hand, lack of the infrastructure such as school building, Desks and chairs, drinkable water, sanitation facilities also caused to the low education background of the children.

Our Action -Build up Visible facilities and Invisible potential and motivation- We accessed to such areas and have built and renovated school buildings with sharing the importance of education and getting the maximum participation from the parents and relevant organizations.

We firstly talked about the importance of education and tried to share the current educational situation and needs of that area before starting project. After starting, due to build the ownership and trust relation among actors, we made the action plan with parents and teachers, finally could facilitate their participation for school building construction. In this project, not only buildings, we provided the facilities to the access the drinkable water facilities and toilet facilities. To improve the nutrition level of children using home garden system and school garden applied to all most of the schools because of the malnutrition problem of children.

Here, to implement more effective and sustainable project from the long term view, we have to combine “building-facility support” with “soft support” like educational programs together depending on area needs. Now, we are conducting “Installing Filter plus Water Resource Management Education” in Anuradhapuraand Polonnaruwa in North Central Province, “Constructing the well and toilet plus Public Health Education” in Wilgamuwa in Central province, Nikaweratiwa in North Western Province and “Waste Management plus Environmental Education” in Moratuwa in Western Province.
